❂ INDIA : Infantry Day

Indian Army Infantry Logo

Infantry Day is observed across India on 27 October to commemorate the sacrifices made by the infantry who fought against Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir in 1947. This was the first infantry action by the Indian Army after independence.

Why October 27 is celebrated as Infantry Day?

• In 1947, Jammu and Kashmir was invaded by tribals who were getting support from Pakistani Army.
• The then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru ordered the Indian Army for quick action against the invaders. Following the order, the 1st Battalion of the SIKH Regiment was sent to Kashmir.
• On 27 October 1947, the Regiment was airlifted from Delhi and landed at Srinagar to liberate Kashmir from the invaders.
• It must be noted that the order for the same was made by Nehru after Maharaja Hari Singh signed the ‘Instrument of Accession’ acceding Jammu Kashmir to India.

Instrument of Accession in brief

Accession simply means to acquire or attain.  The Instrument of Accession is a legal document executed on 26 October 1947 by Maharaja Hari Singh who was the ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.

After signing ‘The Instrument of Accession’ Maharaja Hari Singh agreed to accede or merge Jammu and Kashmir with India.

❂ WORLD : World Day for Audiovisual Heritage

The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage takes place every 27 October. This commemorative day was chosen by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 2005 to raise awareness of the significance and preservation risks of recorded sound and audiovisual documents (films, sound and video recordings, radio and television programmes).

This year, the theme of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is “Your Window to the World”.
